In the Manner of Debi Cates...

wire and weed : Ferney-Voltaire, FR

If you've followed my photo blogging for any significant amount of time, you know one of the photobloggers I most admire is Debi Cates. Debi lives in West Texas, which is pretty hard scrabble, dusty, dry, and otherwise seemingly average. Debi takes photos of this area of Texas that are simply breathtaking and will blow you away. Take some time to check out her blog. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

One thing knowing Debi has done for my eye is, tuning it to seeing the beauty in what otherwise is easily dismissed as ugly or no longer useful. Like this. She can also take an eyesore, like high-tension electrical wires, and make them a thing of beauty. Like this.  She also writes and illustrates fabulous human interest stories. Like this.

Today's photo is my feeble attempt at an homage to Debi. I even managed to get some high wires in the act. Greetings from France and Switzerland, Debi!

14 January 2010: Update--This entry has been edited to replace a link featuring high-tension wires on Debi Cate's blog. Be sure to check it out. It's fabulous!

You've managed WELL! what a find too...I think the weed is some sort of thistle (maybe) and instead of flower petals on top, they have a crown of snow. So sweet. (& high wires too)

Janet, thank you so much. Imagine my surprise when I saw today's post! Very kind of you. Very kind.

I love your homage, complete with the clever high lines in the background. I had a delightful moment imaging you taking this photo. How many passerbys wondered what the heck you were doing? A girl after my own heart. :)

How to say "beautiful weeds" in French? I bet it sounds divine. (Not like in Texas Twang.)

That "waltzing" photo you liked? From November 21, 2008. The trouble with finding old photos is one of the reasons I make monthly thumbnails post on my blog.

How do you other photographers handle finding old photos?

Tash: Thanks! I really had fun with this. One of the things I love about other photo bloggers and learning to see the beauty in stuff I'd otherwise ignore. I LOVE the snow on these and the light and the background. I have more. Maybe I'll post a couple on my other blog. Hm...

Debi: You're so welcome. Really, I should be the one thanking you!

According to my iGoogle translator, it's "belles plantes", but I have a feeling that isn't entirely accurate. I'll have to ask my Francophile friends.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting a link to the waltzing high wires. That was exactly the photo I was looking for!

In the case of my blog, there's a search box in the left, top corner. I just enter keywords, like "Lincoln" or "Debi Cates" or "Switzerland" or "weeds" and I generally am taken to my photos with those words in the entry. I've also added a labels cloud with selected tags, which makes it easy to find things within certain parameters. Beyond that, I'm useless.

Mo: Thanks! Did you check out Debi's work?
