Sacré-Cœur

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur : Montmarte, Paris, FR

This is the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur (The Basilica of the Sacred Heart) in Montmartre, Paris. It was our first stop on the day my sister and I arrived in the City of Lights. The basilica is built in the Romanesque-Byzantine style and features a number of beautiful mosaics in the interior. For a mere 5 euros, you can climb 300 narrow, claustrophobic stairs to the top of the large dome and enjoy panoramic views of Paris. This beautiful church features two bronze statues at the front of the building. This one is of Joan d'Arc.

To see more photos, go here and see additional pictures I took this week as well as photos I took in August when Maya and I met up with fellow photobloggers Peter and Virginia (who lives in Birmingham, Alabama, but has an ongoing love affair with Paris) and climbed to the top of this Paris beauty.

I remember huffing and puffing there. I saw it at night, though.
Trey, at Stuck in Customs had an interesting HDR treatment of this church today, http://www.flickr.com/photos/stuckincustoms/4308719820/sizes/l/ but he wasn't very complimentary of "tourists." I don't know where that comment came from.

VJ: In fact, we did... not. However, we did climb the stairs at Notre Dame. And all over the Metro. And all throughout the Louvre. And the Arc d'Triomphe. And the Pantheon. Paris is a stair-happy city, let me tell ya! Next trip, though, we'll do the stairs at Sacre-Coeur, 'cause I have a new camera and I want to take pictures from the top again. I treasure the memory of the four of us hiking up there, though, and hope we get to do it again. When are you coming back this way?

Larry: Montmartre has a lot of stairs, so huffing and puffing is the name of the game! Trey's photo is cool. Thanks for sharing. Not sure I agree with his comment that tourists aren't human beings. Sure, they can be moronic (in D.C., we call them tourons. Moron + tourist = touron.) But even tourons are human.
