Wonderland

Lower gardens : Palace of Versailles : Versailles, FR

The gardens at Versailles are vast and quite beautiful. While I wasn't overly enthusiastic about the view of the landscaping from the ground level on the upper terrace (too much dirt, not enough flowers), I was quite taken by the gardens on the subterranean terrace. They made me think of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, because they were symmetrical, but whimsical.

Janet, this series on Versailles has been very interesting. It's been years since I was there, so this is like a travelogue. Beautiful photos. My very favorite so far has been the chandelier reflected in the mirror in the Hall of Mirrors. Ultra elegant. Looks like you had a wonderful trip.

It reminds me of an archtech's rendering. The planter boxes around the trees seals the deal. Could you imagine having to edge those lawns?

Lovely! I bet it was so much fun deciding on the composition of each photo - so may lines and angles to choose from.

My confession is that I've never been all that impressed with the pictures I've been of Versailles. That style just isn't my thing. But I've never seen the grounds before now. These pictures are AMAZING.
