Colorful ceilings and domes : Catedral de la Almudena : Madrid, ES
I love shooting churches and cathedrals and I've shot a lot of them as a photographer. From Notre Dame in Paris to the Abbey at Bellelay in Switzerland, from the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., to the Mormon Temple in Nauvoo, Illinois, religious edifices fascinate me.

The Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena, though, has to be hands down the most beautiful cathedral I have ever photographed. I'll let the photos and the slideshow (see below) speak for themselves.

Hi Janet. I love religions buildings, too (the old ones), though I'm not religious. There's a sense of awe and mystery that draws me to them.
I'm guessing the symmetry and color are what make this one your favorite.
Petrea: Yes, largely. So many churches, especially in the Gothic style, can be a bit cold and dark. I loved how light and warm this cathedral was (is). The bright colors were also inviting. Simply lovely.

I've never seen such vivid colors used in a cathedral before! That was quite a little (big) discovery we stumbled upon!

Almudena cathedral is beautiful indeed. Your photographs are fantastic and make me miss the place, Janet. I went there last year and took some as well and post them at Nomads Paradise.
