Today, we took a photography seminar with Geneva-based lifestyle photographer, Oliver O'Hanlon. One of the assignments included street photography. I set up this shot intending to photograph the guy coming down the ramp. Just as I got ready to release the shutter, a woman walked into the frame coming up the ramp. It was sort of an Henri Cartier-Bresson moment.

Murano

On our last full day in Venice, we went to Murano and Burano. To get to the islands, you have to take a ferry. The ride to Murano is about 10 minutes and to Burano, another 40 minutes. Murano is known for its glassworks and Burano is known for its lace and colorful buildings.

When you visit a place for just a couple of days, you're pretty limited in your ability to get to know a city and take photos that don't look like all of the other 745.3 bajillion people who have snapped the exact same photo. Unfortunately, there's very little that's unique about the top photo, expect the people who are in it and who are probably not in the 745.299 bajillion other photos that are out there. Still, it's evidence I was there, so there's that.

Schloß Seebenstein

Our next stop on the trip was friend Daniella's parents, Christine and Hellmut, who live in Seebenstein, just south of Vienna. In the last three months of my time in Austria, I served in the town of Wiener Neustadt and that's where I met Christine and Hellmut and their daughters, Sabine, Daniella, and Sonja. They became very dear friends and we've stayed in touch over the years. I was thrilled they invited us to stay with them. It was such a treat and like being with family again. On our second day in Seebenstein, Christine walked with us to the castle above their town. Unfortunately, it was closed for tours, so we only saw the outside. Still, it was a nice walk.

It was great to see people coming into the exhibit and experiencing the art and life of this little-known Czech artist. The hope is that an exhibit in Italy will be just as well received!

Hyde Park Corner

A lot of corners in London are filled with statues and memorials to generals and wars. Hyde Park Corner is no exception. There is an equestrian statue to Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and memorials to Australia and New Zealand for their contributions during World Wars I and II. The corner also includes the great Wellington Arch. We were in a bit of a hurry, so only took pictures of the Wellington Arch and the New Zealand memorial.

Sculpture Unknown

Sculpture Unknown : Geneva, CH

This is the sculpture in the courtyard of the Permanent Mission of the United States of America to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva. I have no idea what the sculpture is titled or who did it, but I thought it was kind of cool. (I took this photo from the 8th floor terrace of the World Health Organization, by the way.)

Hotel de France

Not much to tell here. These are photos of the Hotel de France on the Grand Rue in Ferney-Voltaire. Supposedly the restaurant is one of the best in town, but having not eaten there yet, I can't confirm that.

Confessional

Confessional IHS : Notre Dame St. Eglise : Ferney-Voltaire, FR

A few weeks ago, I noticed the door of Notre Dame St. Eglise--the Catholic church in Ferney--was open, so I popped in for a look. It was dark inside with the only lights being the one over this confessional, a few over the altar, and the waning dusk through the stained glass windows. I only took a handful of photos, as I quickly noticed that people were seated in a small chapel at the front of the church and I didn't want to disturb their contemplation anymore than I likely already had.

Obviously this isn't strictly a black and white photo, but I'm bending my self-imposed rules for this photo because the building itself was a range of black, gray, and white tones. It just happened to have an advertisement painted on the side in primary colors.

We Gather Together...

 We Gather Together... : Thanksgiving in France : Ferney-Voltaire, FR

Last night, my boss hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for nine American expats and 21 people of other nationalities. We had folks from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Russia, and the United Kingdom. The food was fabulous, but the company was the best part. We enjoyed the six culinary elements of Thanksgiving: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, as well as offerings from around the world. It was an international smorgasbord and it was wonderful!
