Prague at Dusk

Prague Castle at Dusk : Prague, CZ

After enjoying dinner and a lovely visit with Maya's cousin, Petra, we headed back down through Letenské sady/ Letna Park. The sun had just set and the sky was that beautiful blue you get at dusk. From the park, there is a nice view of the Prague Castle and Old Town. Just a couple of pictures...

Prague by Night, Part II

Gargoyle : St. Vitus Cathedral : Prague, CZ

Prague's largest cathedral is St. Vitus located inside the Prague Castle on the other side of the Charles Bridge. It's a Gothic cathedral and I would have liked to have seen the inside, but we ran out of time. I did, however, get a few good snaps at dusk.

Nom Nom Nom

Nom, nom, nom : Pac-Man on the Waterfront : Geneva, CH

All along the Geneva waterfront, this year's light display includes the iconic Pac-Man figures. I'm not sure how Pac-Man fits into Christmas. Maybe this is a recognition of 2010 being the 30th anniversary since the release of Pac-Man. Anyway--this was a photo worth taking and I like how it turned out.

Geneva Lights

Monet-on-the-Rhone : Geneva, CH

Like many towns and big cities in Europe, Geneva goes all out on the lights. This year's lights were quite pretty and it was hard to choose which photos to post. To see more photos from Geneva, go here.

Fêtes de Genève, Part I

Around the World : Fêtes de Genève : Geneva, CH

This evening included an invitation to the home of work colleagues who live right on Lake Geneva across from the city's iconic Jet d'Eau. The event being observed from the safety of their balcony was the Fêtes de Genève--an annual festival/carnival that ends with one of the world's largest, choreographed fireworks displays.

Arc d'Triomphe

Janeen and Janet at the Arc d'Triomphe : Paris, FR

This is a picture of me and Janeen at the Arc d'Triomphe after our visit to Sainte-Chapelle. While we were at Napolean's grand monument, there was a wreath laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame. Here's a bit of trivia for you: when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Mrs. Kennedy--remembering the Eternal Flame over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc d'Triomphe--requested a similar flame over her husband's grave at Arlington National Cemetery. Inside/Out

Inside/Out :  Musée du Louvre : Paris, FR

I took way too many pictures both outside and inside the Louvre. Rather than regale you with a lengthy photo essay, here's one shot from inside the entrance looking out. And the rest are here (exteriors) and here (interiors).*

* Most of my photo sets from Paris include pictures I took in January as well as ones I took when I visited for the first time back in August.

Musée du Louvre

Musée du Louvre : Paris, FR

Our second day in Paris, my sister and I went to Notre Dame and Musée du Louvre. If you've never been to Paris, this museum, like so many things in the City of Lights, is enormous! If, in the two hours we were there, we saw even one-one hundreth of what the Louvre has to offer, I'd be stunned. That said, we did see a lot of statuary, sculpture, French and Flemish art, stained glass, tapestries, and royal treasures that were c'est magnifique!

We arrived just as they turned on the lights on the Louvre. The detail in the buildings is stunning :

One thing that struck both of us is, so often people poo-poo the collections in museums in the United States, and particularly within the Smithsonian and National Gallery systems in Washington, D.C. The fact is, though, there's a lot of high-quality art to be seen in the U.S. The difference between U.S. collections and European collections is quantity. The vast amount of art just in Paris alone boggles the mind. That said, though, the U.S. collections aren't too shabby. Okay, I'm climbing off my soap box! LOL!

If you've been to Paris and if you're an American and you'd like to support the efforts of the Louvre and exchanges between the U.S. and France, consider making a contribution through American Friends of the Louvre.

Rouge

The Moulin Rouge : Pigalle, Paris, FR

After visiting the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, we walked down to the Moulin Rouge (French for red windmill) to snap a few pictures of this Paris icon. To see a few more photos--some taken in August last year and the rest taken last week--go here.

Fêtes de Genève

Ferris wheel at the opening of Fêtes de Genève : Geneva, CH

As a run up to Swiss Confederation Day (August 8), Geneva hosts a party called Fêtes de Genève. Walking back to the carpark the other evening, there was this ferris wheel set up at the foot of the Pont du Mont Blanc. The light was perfect and I snapped a few pictures.

And now, for the first time in months, I'm caught up on my blog! Can't say that will last long, though. I'm going to Paris this weekend and leaving the laptop home. Oh well.

Geneva on the Lake

Enjoying the cool air by the lake : Lake Geneva : Geneva, CH

Geneva is situated on Lac Leman (Lake Geneva), the largest fresh water lake in Europe. This evening, we went walking along the harbor after dinner. This is one of the many pictures I took and is my favorite from the batch. Note the Jet d'eau.
