ILO

Stained glass : Gift from the Federal Republic of Germany : ILO : Geneva, CH

I participated in a series of meetings at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva this week. The building is filled with art and exhibits that depict the history of labor in civilization. This stained glass, from the Federal Republic of Germany, was tucked away in a hallway near the gift shop.

Lavender's Blue, Dilly Dilly...

Lavender on the Terrace : Geneva, CH

On the eighth floor terrace at work, they have planter boxes full of all kinds of flora. Before coming to Europe, I was not a big fan of lavender, but after spending a lovely weekend in Provence surrounded by the lavender fields, I fell in love with the stuff. I'm lobbying for lavender next year in some of our planter boxes on our own terrace...

Town Hall Meeting

Town Hall Meeting : Geneva, CH

We had a town hall meeting at work the other day to discuss reorganization plans. The ceiling tiles and lights in the Executive Board Room make for really cool photos. I couldn't resist snapping one with my Apple iPod Touch.

Labor

International Labor Organization : Geneva, CH

From the eighth floor of the World Health Organization, you can see the International Labor Organization (on the right) and the Jet d'Eau (on the left). In the background, the Saleve and, if there weren't clouds, you'd also see Mont Blanc.

Cuppa Cuppa

Cuppa Cuppa : Geneva, CH

I love herbal teas. And this is my new tea cup from the Czech Republic. Nothing like a good cup of Teekanne Mint Tea on a cold morning.

World No Tobacco Day

Alphorns at the World Health Organization : Geneva, CH

Today was World No Tobacco Day at the World Health Organization in Geneva. To commemorate the event, they brought in some Swiss Alphorn artists (alphornists? What do you call musicians who play alphorns, besides "breathless"?) It was a cool performance and a great way to kick off this event.

Nothing to See Here, Folks...

Move Along : Geneva, CH

Had a little bit of excitement at work today. Apparently someone left a suspicious package in one of the underground garages. There wasn't a lot to see above ground, except a lot of emergency equipment. I have no idea what the final outcome was, though I can report there was no explosion.

Church in Blue

Church in Blue : Grand Saconnex, CH

This little church sits in the tiny commune of Grand Saconnex on the western edge of Geneva. I worked late the other night and drove past this sanctuary on my way home. I liked the light on the building, so I stopped, pulled out my iPod Touch, and snapped this photo.

Funny Snow

Big Hair : Geneva, CH

I decided to take my camera to work today and I'm glad I did. After Tuesday/Wednesday's big snow, the sculptures on the grounds at work were a bit hilarious. Here are some of my favorites. P.S. It's suppose to snow again today. I guess winter is early? To see more photos, go here.

Wave Off...

Wave off... : Geneva, CH

This wraps up my month of nearly all black and white photos. I've rather enjoyed it and will try to post BWs more often. Here's a slideshow of all of this month's BWs.

Spiral

Steel Nautilus

For the rest of the month of November, I'm going to try to post my photos in black and white. No special reason. Just something different. To kick off the series, this is a photo of the underside of a spiral staircase at work.

Fall Colors

Compliments of Mother Nature : Geneva, CH

Rather than returning to my desk the other day after lunch, I decided to go for a walk around the campus at work and shoot a few photos of the fall colors. Here's an autumnal treat from Geneva. To see a few more, go here.

Ariana

Statuary : Ariana Museum : Geneva, CH

When you have guests in town, it's a great excuse to see things you otherwise wouldn't. Maya and Rachel came to my work one afternoon and, in addition to a tour they took of the United Nations Palais, we went up on the roof of my workplace and enjoyed views of Geneva, the Jura, the lake, and the US Mission. We also ate lunch at the Ariana Museum, which was fun and tasty. This photo features a statue on the roof of the Ariana. I shot it through a gap between two umbrellas on the terrace where we ate lunch.

Art4Health

Pop art of India's Aishwarya Rai : Geneva, CH

Currently, there is an exhibit in the library at work that features commissioned art featuring images of women from developing countries that portray them as strong and proactive with regard to women's sexual and reproductive health. The project is called Art4Health and is a collaborative effort between several non-governmental and intergovernmental agencies.

What So Proudly We Hailed...

What So Proudly We Hailed : Geneva, CH

During the annual World Health Assembly, WHO flies the flags of its 193 member states. I snapped this photo of my country's flag. My understanding is, they're flown in alphabetical order, but I'm not sure if that's done in French (États-Unis d'Amérique) or English (United States of America). I suppose, if I researched the flags around it, I'd get my answer...

Speaking of the U.S. of A., I'm off to the States for two weeks--a week in Seattle and a week in Washington, D.C. I hope to post pictures from both. We'll see what time permits.
