Arrival / Departure

Arrival / Departure : Gare Cornavin : Geneva, CH

Today, we took a photography seminar with Geneva-based lifestyle photographer, Oliver O'Hanlon. One of the assignments included street photography. I set up this shot intending to photograph the guy coming down the ramp. Just as I got ready to release the shutter, a woman walked into the frame coming up the ramp. It was sort of an Henri Cartier-Bresson moment.

Animal Shoot

Lindan : Geneva, CH

Our friends, Jason and Everett, adopted a new kitten in their lives -- a Bengal named Lindan. We asked if we could shoot a few photos as Maya wants to include animals in her photography portfolio. A couple of shots here and more to be seen here.

The Maddix-Peachey's also have an African Grey Parrot named Olive. I took a few snaps of her, too.

And, their house has an enormously fabulous garden, which Charlie loved! He had a good time, too.

Chartreuse

Chartreuse : Geneva, CH

Walking to the bus on the way home, I looked up and this was my view. Out came the Apple iPod Touch and viola--another Hipstamatic print.

Real Brunch

Brunch at Au P'tit Bonheur : Chambesy, Geneva, CH

Believe it or not, that's real bacon and this is real brunch! It's hard to find a place for brunch in this area, but Maya found Au P'tit Bonheur through Glocals and et voilà! Eggs Benedict. If you live in the greater Geneva area, this is the place for a late breakfast on a sunny Sunday morning. Tres fantastique!

Note: The owners speak English, French, German, and Italian!

Think Spring?

Fountain Repurposed : Geneva, CH

And speaking of green things and spring, crocuses and jonquils are starting to pop up. These beauties are in a fountain on the Rue du Rhone in Geneva.

Water Taxi : Rhone River : Geneva, CH

Don't worry. Your eyesight isn't getting worse. I intentionally shot this picture this way. It's a water taxi in the harbor in Geneva. Rather than sitting in traffic trying to cross from one side of Geneva via the Pont du Mont Blanc to the other, you can simply hop a water taxi and cross from the Paquis to Eaux Vivex in no time.

2TC: Sneak/Peak

Senso : Geneva, CH

This week's 2 Things Challenge is Sneak/Peak. Friday's trip into downtown Geneva included a little window shopping. I snuck the above shot looking into the restaurant Senso. The maître d' was not that excited about having his picture taken. Fortunately, I caught him before he stepped out of the shot!

Then we took a peek into the window displays at the Patek Philippe salon. They don't include price tags on their watches (if you have to ask, you can't afford it), but they are the peak of Swiss watches.

On the 8

On the 8 : Geneva, CH

Yesterday, to save ourselves the headache of being stuck in Geneva's infamous evening traffic, we took the number 8 bus from the World Health Organization to the Rue du Rhone. I snapped this photo of a young woman on the bus using my Apple iPod Touch and its Hipstamatic app.

Benches : A Series

A Girl and Her Dog : Château de Penthes : Geneva, CH

The Swiss and the French have this funny habit of putting benches in random places with views of little interest or inspiration. This bench is an exception and begins a series Maya and I will be doing on the benches of Switzerland and France and their views--auspicious or not. This is Maya and Charlie enjoying a piece of art by the Swiss artist André Bucher. The piece is titled "Les quatre confédérés."

Fishy

Fish pedicure tanks : Natural Fish Spa : Geneva, CH

As a Valentine's Day treat, Maya and I went to Geneva for fish pedicures at Natural Fish Spa. Fish pedicures are the latest new thing in the world of foot care. You go to a spa/salon and dunk your feet in an aquarium full of fish and they eat the dead skin off your feet and toes. It's surprisingly efficient and kind of wild. (Speaking of the wild, apparently you can experience something similar out in nature.) Unfortunately, I didn't have my good camera with me. These photos were taken using the Hipstamatic app on my Apple iPod Touch. I'll probably be going back, though, and will take better pictures next time.

Thanks for the pedicure, Maya. It was a total blast!

E = Exciting!

E = Exciting! : Geneva, CH

This photo was taken as part of an effort to practice using aperture (A) priority on my camera and adjusting the polarizing filter on my lens. Neither really worked like I wanted, but it's still a worthwhile photo. This is an office building on the Avenue Appia behind the International Committee of the Red Cross/Red Crescent in Geneva.

Hipstamatic...

Hipstamatic (Ina) No. 1 : Geneva, CH

So, I recently purchased an Apple iPod Touch. In addition to the already built-in camera, I download a cool little app called Hipstamatic. This bit of software mimics the kind of photos you use to get out of instamatic cameras. The above picture was taken at work yesterday.

Nom Nom Nom

Nom, nom, nom : Pac-Man on the Waterfront : Geneva, CH

All along the Geneva waterfront, this year's light display includes the iconic Pac-Man figures. I'm not sure how Pac-Man fits into Christmas. Maybe this is a recognition of 2010 being the 30th anniversary since the release of Pac-Man. Anyway--this was a photo worth taking and I like how it turned out.

Swan, Swan, Butterfly...

Majesty : Geneva, CH

That's the opening line to a song by R.E.M. Unfortunately, no butterflies in today's post, but I did snap a lovely photo of a swan in Geneva the other evening. I'd never seen one of these birds outside a picture until I moved to this part of Europe. They're absolutely majestic.

12/20/10--Oops correction: Friend JaneAnne just reminded me that the words to the R.E.M. song are "Swan, swan, hummingbird..." She says this may mean I have to revoke my Child-of-the-80s membership card. Ack! Thanks for the correction, JA.
