Betrayal for Peace: 1938 - 1945

Monument to German Occupation, 1938 - 1945 : Prague, CZ

In 1938, Germany's National Socialist Workers' Party, led by the dictator Adolf Hitler, began threatening war against then-Czechoslovakia for land bordering Germany known as the Sudatenland. Hitler had already taken over Austria and was threatening war in Europe. In an effort at appeasement, the British and the French, in a colossal betrayal of an ally that would prove fruitless in the end, signed over Czechoslovakia to Germany. The hope was, if Hitler was granted the Sudatenland, he'd cease his saber-rattling and be satisfied with the additional Lebensraum (living space) for Germany and Germans and quietly go away. The Czechs were not present at the signing of the Munich Agreement (or the Munich Betrayal, as it became known in Czechoslovakia) and, when they protested, the British and French told the Czechs, if they rose up against the Germans, the Brits and French would consider it an act of aggression and would come to Germany's defense. This monument memorializes Germany's occupation of Czechoslovakia from 1938 until 1945, when the country was liberated by Patton's U.S. Third Army.

Parking through Prague

Palace Gardens : Prague, CZ

The last time we were in Prague, we joked about "porking through Prague." We weren't referring to some kind of illicit, sexual orgy, but rather that every night, we tried out a different pork or meat dish at dinner. On this trip, we discovered or were shown some really fabulous gardens and have decided that on our next trip to Prague, we will be "parking through Prague." These gardens below the Castle were once part of the Castle vineyards. If you start at the top and work your way down, you get to see some lovely spaces and views of the city. There is a fee to visit the parks, but it's worth every crown.

St. Vitus Cathedral

Main Portal : St. Vitus Cathedral : Prague, CZ

As anyone who reads this blog knows, I love a good cathedral. I enjoy photographing them, I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into them, and I like their history. I confess, I know nothing about St. Vitus. I also have to say I was I was thoroughly underwhelmed by this cathedral. You have to pay to enter the main sanctuary and approach the altar area. I wasn't willing to do that, so as a result, I have only a few photos of Prague's most prominent landmark.

Prague Castle Grounds

Chatting : Prague Castle : Prague, CZ

Just a few more random photos after the documentary shoot in the Imperial Stables at the Prague Castle. Maya and Alena stand outside the exhibit space, chatting and waiting for Alena's mother.

While we were waiting for Alena's mother, I stepped outside the castle grounds and snapped a photo of this young man guarding the entrance to the palace.

View of Prague

View of Prague from the Restaurant Villa Richter : Prague, CZ

While Kieran was shooting B-roll, Maya and I took her cousin, Petra Tondera, to lunch at the Villa Richter. It was a beautiful day and the views of Prague's Old Town and the Charles Bridge were spectacular!

Růžena Zátková 2.0

Růžena Zátková by Mestrovic : Prague, CZ

Just a few shots from the Růžena Zátková Exhibit at the Prague Castle. The sculpture above is by the Yugoslav-Croatian artist Ivan Mestrovic.

Experiencing Růžena : Prague, CZ

It was great to see people coming into the exhibit and experiencing the art and life of this little-known Czech artist. The hope is that an exhibit in Italy will be just as well received!

Documenting Růžena

Růžena Zátková by Mestrovic : Prague, CZ

As I stated earlier, the whole point of this recent trip to Prague was to film the exhibit featuring the artwork of Maya's great-grandmother, Růžena Zátková. The exhibit closes today (31 July) and this art may not be seen again for several years. (The curator, Alena Pomajzlova, is hoping to do a similar exhibit in Italy in a couple of years, but that remains to be seen.) Maya hired a camera man--a lovely expat Aussie named Kieran D'Arcy--and Monday was spent shooting Růžena's art and interviewing Alena.

Dvořák

Antonín Dvořák Statue and Prague Castle as seen from the Rudolfinum : Prague, CZ

One of the Czech Republic's most loved composers is Antonín Dvořák. Most people know his Symphony No. 9, which he wrote while he was living in America.

People-Watching, Prague Style

Two heads are better than one : Prague, CZ

I passed a lot of folks sitting on benches along the riverfront or leaning against the railing that separates the upper promenade from the lower promenades and piers. This couple was especially striking, because of the view they were enjoying of Prague's iconic castle.

Waiting : Prague, CZ

This woman appeared to be waiting for someone. I was most struck by her dark hair, fair skin, and the rosiness of her cheeks. This photo doesn't quite do her justice.

Discussion of Import : Prague, CZ

These two old guys where having a rather animated discussion on a bench outside St. Nicholas Church off the main square in Old Town. I have no idea what they were discussing, but it looked pretty serious. I caught them in a quiet moment.

Hackney No. 1 : Prague, CZ

I caught a couple of photos of this young lady--a hackney, or carriage driver--near the main square in Old Town. She looked positively bored out of her mind. And who can blame her? If I had to deal with tourists every day as my livelihood, I might become a little glassy-eyed, too!

Sunday Walk in Prague, Part II

Charles Bridge Silhouette : Prague, CZ

I enjoyed a nice view of the Charles Bridge from the riverfront. This crucifix stood out from all of the other statues that line the bridge. (I confess, I doctored this photo a bit in post-production. The sky was a bit washed out and flat. I darkened it a little and upped the reds and blues. Call it cheating, but I like how it turned out.)

Pediment : Prague, CZ

One thing I often notice about tourists is, they don't look up. As a result, they miss a lot of detail and beauty in the buildings around them. This pediment (I think that's what it is) was on the outside of what otherwise seemed like a really dull building. I think it's rather striking. Note the sheep at the bottom.

Bohemian Crystal : Prague, CZ

Crystal is probably the one thing the Czech Republic is most known for. Often referred to as Bohemian crystal, cups and goblets, decanters and vases, and a host of other pieces like these can be found in shop windows and second-hand stores throughout Prague. Be careful where you buy, though. Most of the shops in the Old Town area are run by the Russian mafia. If you want the real deal, go to the Moser flagship store in Prague near Wencelas Square.

Sunday Walk in Prague, Part I

In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Santi... : Prague, CZ

On Sunday afternoon, I was feeling a little restless, so I left the apartment with camera in hand and went for a little walk. My intention was to walk across the Charles Bridge, but the crowds were so thick, I decided to walk along the riverfront instead. I turned down a quiet little street and encountered many hidden treasures and lots of interesting people.

Rooftop View

View of the main square in Old Town from the
rooftop of the Hotel Prince : Prague, CZ

On Sunday, we decided to have lunch at the rooftop restaurant on top of the Hotel Prince in Old Town. Note to anyone planning to visit Prague: This is a great place to go for drinks or ice cream with friends and to get off your feet for a bit and enjoy an alternate view of Old Town and the surrounding area, but the menu isn't worth the paper it's printed on, so skip it for a meal.

Tourists in the Clock Tower : Prague, CZ

One of the places to enjoy a good view of Prague is from the Clock Tower in Old Town. At various times throughout the day, a trumpeter dressed in Medieval costume comes to the top of the tower and blows his horn.

St Nicholas Church Tower : Prague, CZ

Over the rooftops, you can see the domes of St Nicholas Church. This style of dome is common throughout the Czech Republic and Austria and is usually featured on a Baroque church.

Prague at Dusk

Prague Castle at Dusk : Prague, CZ

After enjoying dinner and a lovely visit with Maya's cousin, Petra, we headed back down through Letenské sady/ Letna Park. The sun had just set and the sky was that beautiful blue you get at dusk. From the park, there is a nice view of the Prague Castle and Old Town. Just a couple of pictures...

Cathedral of St. Antonina : Prague, CZ

On Saturday, we crossed the river and went over to the area near Letenské sady (Letna Park in English) to visit Maya's father's cousin so-many-times-removed, Petra Tondera. We went out to dinner at one of the local pubs in her neighborhood and these are just a few of the sites we enjoyed.

Random building with a beautiful fresco near Letenské sady : Prague, CZ

One of the features I love about Prague are the beautiful mosaics, frescoes, and sgraffitoes. I took quite a few pictures of this kind of thing around the main square in Old Town the last time we were in Prague. Turns out, they're all over Prague and they're all quite a treat!

Prague: Redux

Memorial to Jan Hus in the Main Square : Prague, CZ

We hadn't anticipated a second trip to Prague this year, but Maya wants to make a documentary about her great-grandmother, artist Růžena Zátková. In order to tell her story, we needed to photograph and film Růžena's art and interview the curator before the exhibit closes on 31 July. So, back to Prague we went. We didn't do a lot of touristing, but I did manage to capture a few photos here and there. The next few days will feature pictures from Prague and a few shots from the film shoot.

Inner Courtyard : 48 Karlova : Prague, CZ

I love Prague. It's equal parts elegant, but gritty; erudite, but down-to-earth; metropolitan, but small-town. It was great to be back!

Alex Fiferna, our driver, who drove a spotless van.
The brush proves it! : Prague, CZ

Our trip to Prague was made even lovelier by sharing it with two Czech natives--Alex and Dana. Alex was our driver when we went to Krivoklat, Brezi, Krumlov, and Budweis and Dana was our tour guide around Prague. Both were wonderful, fun, interesting guides!

Peace Be Upon You

Prayers for the Dead : Jewish Cemetery : Prague, CZ

After our private tour of Prague, followed by lunch at the Cafe de Paris and our brief visit to the Lennon Wall, we then visited the city's Jewish Quarter and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Prague. It is estimated that more than 100,000 Jews have been buried here spanning a period from the early 1400s to the late 1700s.

Here I raise my Ebenezer... : Jewish Cemetery : Prague, CZ

Just outside the cemetery walls is a museum of the history of the Jews in Prague. The building contains the handwritten names of the more than 80,000 Jews of Czechoslovakia who died at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. Included in the museum is a haunting exhibit of art by children who were transported to Terezín (Theresienstadt) by the Germans. The most haunting part of this exhibit are the dates under each name: the date of the child's birth; the date they produced their art piece; and the date of their death. It is the last date that is so chilling, because the dates are all the same. These children died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Photos are not allowed in the exhibit, but I highly recommend paying the entrance fee to see it, if you visit Prague. It is well worth it.

LOVE LOVE LOVE (Prague)...

Love Love Love : Lennon Wall : Prague, CZ

Imagine No. 1 : Lennon Wall : Prague, CZ

Not too far from the Charles Bridge is what is known as the Lennon Wall. Named for the late John Lennon of The Beatles fame, the wall is covered in graffiti, poetry, love notes, and wishes for peace and freedom. These are just a few pictures.
