Some of Tuineje's animal life: Jan and Christa have two dogs named Felix and Candy. Their neighbors have donkeys. I don't know the donkeys' names, but they all sure were cute!

On a seemingly unrelated note, if I'm reading Blogger correctly, this is my 300th post on The F-Stops Here... and my 1,100th post as a member of the City Daily Photo community. (I clocked 800 posts on my former blog, D.C. Confidential.) Hm. I think this might be cause for a party!

Impromptu Almabtrieb

Almabtrieb : Lauterbrunnen, CH

As we were packing up and preparing to settle our bill with the hotel, the cleaning lady came down the stairs and loudly pronounced, in English, "They're bringing the cows down from the mountain." Maya and I had been telling Rachel all about des Alpages (French) / Alpaufzug (Austria) / Almabtrieb (Swiss) and lamenting that her visit wouldn't coincide with events being held in Annecy, France, in October. Much to our delight, these smaller villages don't have an organized event and we were present for Lauterbrunnen's Almabtrieb this year! More pictures here. Fox in Sox?

Fox on the walking path : Bossy, CH

Occasionally, when walking in the countryside, we see things like ginormous rabbits, bleating sheep and goats, and the ubiquitous Swiss cow. The other day, we saw this fox. He was about 50 metres off and, even with my 15-200 mm lens, this was the closest I could get to the wily feller.

A Menagerie

Krissy and Willy : Brigels, CH

In addition to the hotel and restaurant, Krissy and her husband, are the proud parents of four miniature horse, one onerous donkey, a dog, and a cat. This is Krissy, giving Willy the Donkey his daily hug. Willy will also take you for a walk in the village, if you want. To see a few more pictures, visit my Picasa Web Albums.

100 Strangers: Oscar

Oscar, the rescued dog from Eriteria, thanks to his human, British diplomat Chris : In the fields near Bossy, CH

Okay, technically, this doesn't count as a stranger, but this is Oscar the Dog. We met Oscar the other evening when we were out walking in Switzerland. Oscar is this happy-go-lucky dog from Eriteria who was out with his human, British diplomat Chris. We talked to Chris for a bit and learned the following:

1. Chris rescued Oscar as a puppy off the streets of Eriteria. If he hadn't, Oscar likely would have been shot.
2. Oscar is named for the British author Oscar Wilde.
3. Oscar doesn't much care for bodies of water.

Oscar keeps an eye on us from a gentle hill in the fields bordering France and Switzerland : Bossy, CH

Chris was, as the Brit's say, a lovely chap and his dog, Oscar, was a complete delight to watch as he gambolled and tore about in the fields along the pathway. Now when we go out for our evening walks, we look for Chris and Oscar. Haven't seen them again since, but we're hoping to.

At the Alpage V (Saint Bernards)

The Parade of the Saint Bernards
started with this "little" guy : Alpage : Annecy, FR

These are the last of the photos from the Alpage. In addition to the goats and sheep and cows and geese and horses and donkeys that were a part of the parade, there were Saint Bernhards--those storied dogs of Alpine adventure and bravery who rescue hapless folk from the harsh realities of winter in the Alps. These dogs are HUGE!
