Charlie

Charlie, looking skeptical : Ferney-Voltaire, FR

Our dog, Charlie. He's a wonderful little model and isn't often put off by the camera, but occasionally he gives a look that seems to say, "Are you kidding me?! Another photo? Ugh."

Tourists with a Dog

Janet, Charlie, and Maya at Plitvička Lakes : Plitvička, HZ

Just a few photos of us at Plitvička Lakes. We met a lovely American couple and chatted with them on the hike back up to the shuttle bus departure point. They were kind enough to take our photo.

End of the hike. Ice cream break. Look at Charlie. His eyes and face say,

St Roch Chapel

St Roch Chapel : Puycelci, FR

Puycelci is also the home to the 17th century Chapel of Saint Roch, which honors the life of Christian saint Roch (or Rocco) and the dog who saved him from starvation and death. It's a cute little chapel. Unfortunately, it wasn't open so we weren't able to see the interior.

Doggy Play Date!

Dogs! Dogs! Dogs! (And a few humans...) : Morges, CH

This weekend, the folks who facilitated our adoption of Charlie threw a get together with a bunch of dog owners and their dogs. All of these dogs were rescued by AIDAS and all of them have been placed in good homes with owners who adore their four-legged friends. There were 15 dogs in the group. I think Charlie was a little overwhelmed by all the action, but mostly had fun. I carried him into Lac Leman a few times and he swam a bit.

Nathalie and her dogs, Tilou and Pepito : Morges, CH

This is the woman who fostered Charlie. Nathalie cares for two dogs herself--Pepito (on the right) and Tilou (on the left). Pepito seemed to remember Charlie and was quite excited to see him. Tilou was a little indifferent!

Lindy and her rescued quadrapeds : Morges, CH

This is Rosalinde--Lindy for short--and she's the woman who facilitated our adoption with AIDAS. She and Nathalie are both two of the loveliest people who feel passionately about the dogs and cats they rescue. We're very fortunate to have met them and are so grateful we found Charlie through them.

Charles "Boy" Bentley, a.k.a. Charlie : Morges, CH

This is one of the last photos I took near the end of our Morges gathering. Charlie was feeling a little overwhelmed, because he couldn't figure out who his pack was in all of those dogs. Eventually, he just sat back and watched all of the commotion. We went home not long after that.

Handsome Boy

Charlie : At Paddy's Pub : Ferney-Voltaire, FR

We went to dinner at Paddy's Pub the other night and Charlie went with us. Compared to what he looked like when we first got him, he's turned out to be quite the handsome boy. He is, in a word, elegant.

Six months ago...

This is what he looked like when we got him in February. He was malnourished and looked haunted. Now, he's healthy, happy, bright-eyed, and waggy-tailed!

Lookin' Good...

On Lead : Versoix, CH

Compared to how he looked a month and a half ago, when we brought him home, Charlie is now doing a lot better. He's gained a kilo plus, he's been neutered and had his dew claws removed, he gets walked daily and is fed regularly. In general, he's a much happier dog. In this picture, he's checking out some horses and donkeys in an adjacent field. To see more photos, go here.

Angle of Repose

Angle of Repose : Ferney, FR

On Monday, we formally adopted and brought home the dachshund we visited on Sunday. The next three days were spent trying to figure out a name for this sweet little guy. On Thursday, we finally settled on Charles "Charlie Boy" Bentley. This morning, I took a photo of him in bed in a classic dachshund position--on his back and twisted. It looks painful and I would wake up kinked and unable to walk if I tried that, but Charlie seems to have no problem with this!

Coming to an Address Near You...

Boy : Lausanne, CH

For the last several months, Maya and I have been looking for a dog. She grew up with huskies and I grew up with dachshunds, so we've been trying to find something in between. Maya has spent a lot of time scouring websites in France and Switzerland trying to find the right dog. A couple of weeks ago, she saw an ad for a dachshund in the World Radio Switzerland (WRS) classifieds. We kept meaning to call, but then it didn't happen. By the time we checked the ad again to retrieve the phone number so we could call, the ad had been changed and said he was adopted. So, back to the drawing board.

Today, while we were in the market, we met a couple from Scotland who had the cutest little dapple dog. We started talking to them and asking them about their mixed-breed dog, Rascal. Turns out he has a brother named Poncho. The wife agreed to put us in touch with the woman caring for Pancho. We'd also seen an add for a brindle mixed-breed dog at a shelter down near Annecy. When we got home from the market, we called the shelter in Annecy to arrange to see Eden. Then, on a whim, we looked at the ads on WRS again. Oddly, there was the dachshund we'd seen last week and who had supposedly been adopted out up at the top of the ads again. We were puzzled, but decided to call just in case this wasn't a mistake.

The short story is, Boy was available again and we made arrangements to go and see him. He's with a foster mom down in Lausanne. He was rescued from a puppy mill in Italy where he had been neglected, because he wasn't performing his duties as a breeding dog. He's malnourished and weak, but his coat and teeth are good and he greeted me with a lick and a wag. He's very calm and good with other dogs and cats (there were two other dogs and two cats at his foster mom's) so we're confident he'll do well around the dogs of friends Erik and Christy, who have a Russian terrier, and friend Faith, who is getting a Bischon Havenese this week.

Here's the "whoa!" moment in the story. Turns out the woman who was handling the rescue of Boy was also a participant in the rescue of Rascal and Pancho! It seems as if the universe is aligning to bring this dachel into our lives.

A bit malnourished, but with the proper love and good exercise, he'll be good as new in no time!

Bottom line is, we're happy to give this little guy a home and hope he will enjoy many years of health and happiness.

5 months

Caffrey and Christy : Geneva, CH

Some of you may recall pictures a few months ago of friends Erik and Christy and their new puppy, Caffrey. At the time, Caffrey was about seven weeks old. Now, he's five months old and Christy doesn't pick him up to cuddle on her shoulder like she did in the first picture I posted of them here.

"Puppy" is a loose term here...

Caffrey visited the vet a couple of days ago and weighed in at nearly 28 kilos. That's nearly 60 lbs! The term "puppy" is used loosely with this sweet, docile dog.

100 Friends and Family : Fuerteventura Edition

Jan-Peter and Christa

Maya's uncle, Jan-Peter, and his wife, Christa, are originally from Germany. They're now retired and, based on a vacation taken long, long ago to the Canary Islands, have settled in permanently. Jan was an architect and engineer and Christa spent time in the theater and as a photographer. They were lovely hosts and we enjoyed staying with them!

Fuerteventura : Part VI + Post #300

 Felix

Some of Tuineje's animal life: Jan and Christa have two dogs named Felix and Candy. Their neighbors have donkeys. I don't know the donkeys' names, but they all sure were cute!

On a seemingly unrelated note, if I'm reading Blogger correctly, this is my 300th post on The F-Stops Here... and my 1,100th post as a member of the City Daily Photo community. (I clocked 800 posts on my former blog, D.C. Confidential.) Hm. I think this might be cause for a party!

Headshot of a Black Russian Terrier

GINORMOUS : Black Russian Terrier : Winterthur, CH

Just a headshot of the papa doggy. This is a fully grown black Russian terrier. Lying down, the top of his head was a good 16 inches above the sidewalk. Did I mention, these dogs are huge? Look up "ginormous" in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of one of these dogs next to the definition. HUGE!

100 Friends: Erik and Christy

Friends Erik and Christy with the newest member of their family,
a black Russian terrier named Caffrey : Winterthur, CH

On Sunday, we were asked to go with friends Erik and Christy to Winterthur to visit a breeder of black Russian terriers. The breeder is Swiss-German and Erik was worried his military German wouldn't cut muster, so Maya and I went along to act as interpreters. The Russian terrier is a huge--and I mean HUGE--dog, but Erik and Christy wanted a large dog and that's what they're going to get in Caffrey. (They're name for the dog. Personally, I was trying to convince them to go with Attila Langley Tweety--an homage to the dog's size and a place name based on where Erik and Christy use to live.

It came down to two puppies and when this one picked up the roll of
toilet paper, Erik and Christy knew they'd found their pet!

Bon Anniversaire

Elsie, an Aussie Jack Russell, beseechingly seeks some birthday cake : Ferney-Voltaire, FR

Yesterday was my boss's 50th 30th birthday. A few of us threw a party for her at the home of mutual friends and a grand time was had by all! I took a few pictures, but this was my favorite. This is Elsie, an elderly Jack Russell who still knows how to turn a puppy trick or two. Seriously, though, this was the only picture I took that didn't feature people, so I thought I'd give Elsie 15 minutes of fame. (The people pictures are on Facebook.) :-)

Happy Birthday, Faith!

Tuckered Out...

Bookending the pillow, these dogs are tuckered out and ready for bed! : Basel, CH

Spent a lovely weekend in Basel with friends Scott and Diana. Right before bed, I noticed their dogs, Gibby and Dee Dee were passed out on the couch and bookending a pillow. It cracked me up, so I grabbed my camera and stole a shot.

Springtime a la Rothko

Springtime begins to emerge a la Rothko : Bossy, CH

I just liked the colors and composition of this photo. These two dogs were frolicking in the field with the dog in yesterday's pictures. They were running solo, though, unlike yesterday's dog.
