Gone to Seed...

Gone to Seed... : Bossy, CH

When you think of thistle, you probably think of something prickly with green leaves and stalk and a purple blossom. Usually, that's what you get. At the end of its life, though, this is what it looks like: thistle, gone to seed. Kind of pretty, innit?

Queen Anne's Lace

Posterior Queen Anne's Lace : Bossy, CH

Saw some Queen Anne's Lace while out walking the other evening. Most people photograph it from the front, but I like the view on the back. Hope you do, too.

Fox in Sox?

Fox on the walking path : Bossy, CH

Occasionally, when walking in the countryside, we see things like ginormous rabbits, bleating sheep and goats, and the ubiquitous Swiss cow. The other day, we saw this fox. He was about 50 metres off and, even with my 15-200 mm lens, this was the closest I could get to the wily feller.

Triticale

Triticale--a hybrid of wheat and rye : Bossy, CH

Yesterday's photo featured a harvested field of triticale--a hybrid of wheat and rye. This is what triticale looks like. The grain was developed in the 19th century in Scotland and Sweden and is resistant to diseases that ruin wheat and has the environmental hardiness of rye. Triticale is generally used as fodder, but has recently been used in health food cereals.

Mont Blanc Harvest

Harvested field, sunflowers, and Mont Blanc : Bossy, CH

Walking in Switzerland, some of the fields have been harvested. In this case, it's a crop of triticale--a hybrid of wheat and rye. Tomorrow, I'll show you a photo of this crop prior to harvest.

Expat in Europe

Evening Stroll in Switzerland : Bossy, CH

July 4th is Independence Day in the United States. In the 1850s, my ancestors migrated from German-speaking Switzerland and from the British Isles to America, then trekked across the plains and settled in the Salt Lake Valley. I was unable to find the expat celebration of July 4th that usually takes place in Geneva, so instead I offer this photo of the Swiss countryside as an homage to my ancestors who left this beautiful country to carve out a new life in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

See Gibby Run. Run, Gibby, Run! : Bossy, CH

Scott's and Diana's rat terrier, Gibby, runs off some energy in the fields around Bossy-Collex. The rest of us were walking off that morning's breakfast: Rösti kincaidischer Art.

Skywatch Friday: Clouds, Clouds, and More Clouds...

Cloud over a field of rapeweed : Bossy, CH

As is common in springtime, the weather is warm and sunny one moment, then cold and overcast the next. I went walking the other evening and took these photos of the clouds. I'm also featuring this as part of SkyWatch Friday. To see photos of the sky from all over the world, visit SkyWatch Friday.

Springtime in Switzerland

Springtime in Switzerland : Collex/Bossy, CH

Out for a walk in the Swiss countryside with the camera resulted in this. I have no clue what the yellow flowerly, weedy things are, but there are fields and fields of them. In the distance, just above the hill is 15,000+ foot Mont Blanc. (Click on the image to enlarge.)

Ostern in der Schweiz

An offering from the Easter Bunny to the Blessed Virgin and Son? : Brigels, CH

This weekend included a trip to Canton Graubunden, where we briefly visited a church in the alpine village of Brigels. One of the altars in the church featured an Easter egg offering. Click on the image to see the construction paper Easter Bunny on the baroque altar. I suppose that's one way to tie the secular in with the sacred?

Easter Tree : Bossy, CH

Whilst traipsing around the part of Switzerland that lies across the street from France, we ran across this Easter tree. It was a bunch of forsythia branches decorated with eggs and bunnies and the like. We also saw a few of these in Graubunden. I'll post photos of them a little later this week.

Happy Easter, all!

Springtime a la Rothko

Springtime begins to emerge a la Rothko : Bossy, CH

I just liked the colors and composition of this photo. These two dogs were frolicking in the field with the dog in yesterday's pictures. They were running solo, though, unlike yesterday's dog.
