Recalculating...

Heading to Whidbey Island, the GPS indicates we're traveling under the water :
Clinton-Mukilteo Ferry : Puget Sound, WA

Today included a trip out to Whidbey Island, which required taking a ferry between Mukilteo and Clinton. Winnie, our GPS, became very disoriented and showed our elevation as -345 feet and driving on the water! On the return trip, she did better and actually showed us we needed to take the ferry.

Winnie says, "Take the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry." : Clinton, WA

CDP Monthly Theme: Transportation

Contrails over Geneva : Transportation = Air Transport

This month's theme on City Daily Photo is Transporation. I wanted to post a picture of the bus that runs through my town and that served as the impetus for the name of this blog, but I didn't leave the house on Sunday, ergo I have no pictures of the F Bus, so no go. Instead, I give you this photo of contrails taken in the skies over Geneva the other day.

Here are a few facts and statistics on air travel, in case you're interested:

Busiest Airport in the World (Passengers): Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Altanta, GA, USA
Busiest Airport in the World (Cargo): Memphis International Airport (MEM), Memphis, TN, USA
Largest Number of International-Bound Passengers: London Heathrow International Airport (LHR), London, UK
Most International Destinations Served: Frankfurt International Airport (FRA), Frankfurt, Germany

From the Archives: Washington Dulles International Airport

Dulles International Airport : Fairfax/Loudon County, VA

I've posted this photo before, but as this was the departure point on Sunday evening, I thought I'd put it up again. It's one of my favorite pictures from my D.C. Confidential blog.

Gibby

Gibby, contemplating his next move : On the Rhein : Basel, CH

My friends Scott and Diana have rat terriers. They're a little like Jack Russells, but a whole lot calmer and with longer legs. This is a picture I snapped of Gibby as we were on the ferry crossing the Rhein River from Grossbasel over to Kleinbasel. I think if Scott hadn't had a hold of him, Gibby would have taken a gleeful dive right into the drink.

Parking

Bike Parking under the Bahnhof : Basel, CH

Under the streets surrounding Basel's Hauptbahnhof (train station) is this bike parking lot. My friend Scott warned me I was in for a surprise, but I wasn't expecting this! And this is only one of several lots for bike parking under the tram tracks. Why can't we find stuff like this in the States?

Adventures in Driving

My wheels while I'm in Europe. It's a manual. Ugh.

So, this past weekend, I rented a car. I originally booked an automatic, because that's what I'm accustomed to driving. When I went to pick up said car, they didn't have an automatic, so I had to take a manual transmission. The last time I drove a manual, I was 16 years old and it was my Grandpa Bangerter's VW Rabbit. I stalled it out in an intersection twice and that basically did it for me. No more manuals.

Needless to say, I'm not entirely thrilled to be driving a manual over here. I do okay once I'm in gear and as long as the land is flat, but hills continue to be the bane of my existence. I stalled out and had to go through three light cycles to get into first the other day. It would be a gross understatement to say that rattled my nerves a bit. I'll get the hang of it, though. I have no choice, really.

That said, can someone please explain to me why, in the name of all that is holy, is a portion of the civilized world still driving manuals when we have technology that will do that work for us? Makes absolutely no sense to me, at all. None. But there you have it.

On My Way...

One of the perks of flying Business Class

Just a quick snap from the Executive Lounge for British Airways and Lufthansa at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA-TAC). I grabbed a quick snack and a few minutes online before boarding my 10 hour flight to Frankfurt and then on to Geneva. See you on the other side of the pond!
