The Ballroom

Dancing at the Century Ballroom : Capitol Hill : Seattle, WA

Our last night in Seattle, we went to Capitol Hill and enjoyed an evening of ballroom dancing at The Century Ballroom. It's nice to know there are still places where the dancing is elegant and you can have a conversation without having to shout until you're hoarse.

Thanks to all of our friends who made our visit to Seattle so lovely, and especially to Chris and Rachel and The Baron for hosting us!

Recalculating...

Heading to Whidbey Island, the GPS indicates we're traveling under the water :
Clinton-Mukilteo Ferry : Puget Sound, WA

Today included a trip out to Whidbey Island, which required taking a ferry between Mukilteo and Clinton. Winnie, our GPS, became very disoriented and showed our elevation as -345 feet and driving on the water! On the return trip, she did better and actually showed us we needed to take the ferry.

Seattle Totem

Totem : Pike Place Market : Seattle, WA

This totem sits in a park at the north end of Pike Place Market. I don't know what story is carved into it, but I'm sure it's something about the blessed fabulosity of Seattle or some such thing...

The Garage

Pool at The Garage : Seattle, WA

Last night, we got together with a large group of friends, including my friends JaneAnne and David who drove up from from Portland, at The Garage. It's a nice pool hall and bowling alley that also serves food. We enjoyed burgers, beverages, and great conversation! Thanks to everyone who came out and said hi. It was nice seeing y'all!

100 Unnamed Strangers: Chops

Sign and seal with a chop : Pike Place Market : Seattle, WA

Skipping back to the U.S. for a moment, I took this photo of a vendor in Pike Place selling chops. Chops are a stamp the Chinese use to sign and seal documents. When my sister lived in Hong Kong, she had one made for each of us. Mine is at home right now in a box, but this guy and his wares reminded me of her gift.

100 Unnamed Strangers: Pike Place Busker

Busker : Pike Place Market : Seattle, WA

Now that I'm home, I'll post a few more pictures from the portion of my trip to Seattle. This wizened gent was playing and singing at the entrance to Pike Place Market. I'm including him as one of my 100 Unnamed Strangers.

100 Friends and Family: Dan

Dan : Seattle, WA

I took a few random pictures of folks at the joint birthday celebration. They were your typical friends-at-an-event kind of pictures. This one of friend Dan really stood out, though. I love the colors.

Cupcake-y Goodness

Miniature cake-y goodness from Trophy Cupcake : Seattle, WA

As mentioned in yesterday's post, a joint birthday celebration was held and the hostess brought cupcakes from Trophy Cupcake. There were four flavors: Chocolate with Vanilla Buttercream; Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting; Coconut with Coconut Buttercream, and Neopolitan. My personal favorites were the coconut and the carrot cake. YUMMY! Thanks, Irene, for providing tasty goodies for a fun party.

I'm not a huge fan of the cupcake craze, because I can make a couple dozen cupcakes for the price of four of these (~$3.50/cupcake. Multiply that by four and you've got $14.00 for what amounts to one large slice of cake.) These cupcakes, however, were the first I've had that were and are worth every single penny. Really, really good!

Billiards : The Garage : Seattle, WA

While in Seattle, I was part of a joint birthday party with Maya at The Garage on Capitol Hill. We both enjoyed excellent cupcakes from Trophy Cupcakes, some good food and drinks, good friends, and fun and games.

Blue Angles/Blue Lines

Blue Angles : Olive 8 Condominiums and Hotel : Seattle, WA

Just a play on words and a loose reference to the Navy's Blue Angels precision flying teams, as well as a publishing term for proofs that come back from the printer. The Olive Eight Condominiums and Hotel stands out with its blue glass eaves and no doubt enjoys spectacular views of the city.

Time Will Tell...

Twenty-to-three : Pike Place Market : Seattle, WA

Everyone seems to know the iconic neon sign and clock over Pike Place Market and, since the day was overcast and the light was rotten, there wasn't much I could do to make this well-known sign on Seattle's waterfront look fabulous, I went with a cropped close-up. Not one of my finer photos, but what can you do? Some photos are just better than others, I guess.

100 Unnamed Strangers: Florist

Quiet Beauty : Pike Place Market : Seattle, WA

While in Seattle, I spent an hour wandering around Pike Place Market. The market is filled with fishmongers, produce vendors, artisans, and florists. This woman, making a bouquet, caught my eye. I had to stand on my tiptoes to get this picture, because she wasn't much taller than the flowers around her, and neither was I!

P.S. I looked for fellow photo blogger Chuck Pefley while I was there, but didn't see him. Missed opportunity, I suppose.

Admiralty Head Lighthouse

Admiralty Head Lighthouse : Coupeville, WA

I've featured this lighthouse before on my previous blog, D.C. Confidential. I was in Seattle and had to make a trip to Whidbey Island to retrieve some of my belongings. A trip to the north end of the island was required, which took us past Coupeville and the turn off for Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Fort Casey State Park.
