Marcus u. Lucas

Marcus : Lausanne Cathedral : Lausanne, CH

One day, I'm going to take a course in Gothic architecture and the art and iconography that goes into these magnificent buildings. I managed to find Mark and Luke, but no Matthew and John. Maybe the next time I visit Lausanne, I'll succeed! In the meantime, here's what I want to know: are each of the apostles represented in cathedrals by their horoscope? Is that why Mark is a lion and Luke is a cow?

Organ Loft

Organ Loft : Cathedral of Lausanne : Lausanne, CH

This is the organ loft at the back of the cathedral in Lausanne. For not having my tripod with me and having to use the top of a chair, I think this turned out all right.

Cantons in Glass

Stained Glass : Cathedral of Lausanne : Lausanne, CH

This stained glass window in the Cathedral of Lausanne caught my eye, because it depicts the cantonal flags of some of Switzerland's 26 cantons. My guess is, these were the cantons that existed at the time the cathedral was constructed. Being unable to read the informational panels below it in French, though, I don't know.

Sunset Gothic

Sunset : Lausanne Cathedral : Lausanne, CH

This red door caught my eye and shouted out to be photographed, but the treat in this photo is the beginning of that evening's sunset caught in the cathedral window.

New gargoyle on the side of the Lausanne Cathedral : Lausanne, CH

This past weekend involved a visit to Lausanne, home of the International Olympic Committee. There's a beautiful Gothic cathedral--"another bloody cathedral," as the tour companies say--in the center of the old town. They've recently done some restoration work on it. I loves me a good gargoyle!

Back in the Groove

H : Notre Dame Cathedral : Paris, FR

Somewhere back a few weeks ago, I lost my mojo.

Chandelier Detail : Notre Dame Cathedral : Paris, FR

Sure, there's lots of great stuff to photograph in these parts and I have piles of pictures, but I'm not liking many of them and I feel a bit limited by my equipment. It's a great little camera I have that's turned out some good results and all, but after two and a half years I keep feeling the itch to upgrade.

Anyway--that's neither here nor there right now. The point is, here are a few more pictures from Notre Dame.

Mother : Notre Dame Cathedral : Paris, FR

I think this is the last of the Notre Dame batch, which means if I can sustain my blog posting beyond today, I'll be back tomorrow with photos from the bus tour we took all over the city of Paris!

Here's hoping...

Notre-Dame Detail II

Note the detail in the carvings of the robes: exquisite!

More shots of the exterior of Notre Dame. I could spend days photographing this cathedral and never get it all. I highly recommend clicking on this image to enlarge it. Note the detail carved into the robes of the priests. Unbelievable skill and craftsmanship went into this building that is just awe-inspiring!

Open

Open Contemplation : Notre Dame Cathedral : Paris, FR

Just another photo from inside Notre Dame Cathedral. I can't remember whose crypt this was. I was more interested in the open, stained-glass window than in finding out who the dead guy was.

Two Things Challenge: Cause / Effect

Cause : Climbing to the top of the Sacre Coeur

Next week's Two Things Challenge is Cause / Effect. (This week's is Star / Appeal, but I already posted for that last Sunday.) I had the perfect (I think) pictures for this and couldn't wait to post them next Sunday.

One of the highlights of our weekend in Paris was meeting up with friend and fellow blogger, Virginia of Birmingham Daily Photo and Paris Through My Eyes. Paris blogger Peter also joined us and showed us around Montmartre. We all pressured Virginia into climbing to the top of the Sacre Coeur--something she'd done on a previous trip by accident. The experience was a lot of huffing and puffing up narrow, claustrophobia-inducing staircases, but the result was a lot of laughter with friends (and good views.)

Effect : Laughter and good times with friends.

Notre-Dame Detail

Niche : Notre Dame : Paris, FR

I have a bazillion pictures of Notre Dame. These two are the first of many you'll likely see over the next week or so. I just liked these in particular for the detail they show.

Two Things Challenge: Star / Appeal

Appeal to your (spiritual) star : Notre Dame Cathedral : Paris, FR

This week's Two Things Challenge is Star / Appeal. For this, I chose a photo I took in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Seemed appropriate.
